I AM A BEGINNER AND/OR OUT OF SHAPE - IS F5 FOR ME?
You don’t have to be in awesome fitness shape to train with us!
One significant aspect of skill-based training, like we offer, is that you can begin by focusing on the techniques taught; doing the movements in Muay Thai lightly and exercises choosing light weights until you are more proficient at the skills. In fact, this is what we recommend to all students who begin training with us, regardless of fitness level, as it is the best and safest way to learn and progress.
All our students and instructors have been beginners at one time. Our core value #9 is, “Always remember you were once a beginner.” We have a zero tolerance for bullies in classes, and you’ll find that our students are very supportive and friendly.
The classes are small-group; the average size is 6-10 so that we can scale exercises and workouts to the individual.
F5 is a welcoming atmosphere, with a diverse mix of students who have a desire to learn and the dedication train consistently in a fun environment.
All students start out at F5 with a private intro to Muay Thai and Strength before attending other classes. Your Intro Sessions will be scheduled in your consultation so you can get started asap.
WHAT IS MUAY THAI? IS IT LIKE KICKBOXING?
DO YOU OFFER DROP-INS?
We are currently offering drop-ins for two classes on the schedule: Community Kickboxing and Community Kettlebells. These classes are offered most weekends at specific times. Please check the schedule. These are charity classes and all drop-in purchases will be donated to LA Kitchen, a local charity that empowers the community helping provide job training and education on food wasting and more. Community Classes are beginner friendly, with a basic format that introduces you to the fundamentals of each discipline.
Why don’t we offer drop-ins for all classes?
F5 offers programs that are skill based and require consistent training and commitment to the discipline. Muay Thai and Strength training are amazing workouts, but there are many skills new students need to be familiar with before jumping into a mixed level class. For this reason, every new member at our gym gets a private intro session in each discipline before starting the mixed level group classes, so they are properly prepared. Simply jumping into a class without participating in our on-ramp sessions may be dangerous to you and your fellow students.
Furthermore, as a gym that is dedicated to providing quality coaching to every member in our small group classes, if we allowed “drop-ins” to all our classes our coaches would constantly be overwhelmed with trying to teach a large number of new students “on the fly”, while our current, dedicated members were neglected. We see this as unfair and a problem in the fitness industry in general.
So that you get the proper training to get you the results you want and so that you continue to receive the coaching you deserve in our small group classes, we require that all new students to F5 commit to at least a month of training with us – we even offer a discounted rate on our NEW STUDENT TRIAL so you can try out the gym. We just want to know you are serious about your program and not just randomly dropping in fitness classes to get sweaty (nothing wrong with that in general, it’s just not what we do).
For those that are currently training Muay Thai or with Kettlebells/Barbells at another gym and wish to train with us while they visit Los Angeles, we ask that you also consider the new student trial, as we cannot know for sure that your gym teaches you the same skills we do, unless you have a personal referral from your coach. If your coach knows of our training methods and wishes to provide that referral, please contact us.

Instead of a first class free, we offer a complimentary consultation so we can give you our undivided attention and answer all your questions. Remember that our New Student Trial has two private intros sessions and 5 small group classes – the perfect amount of training to see if F5 is the right gym for you.

DO YOU OFFER PERSONAL TRAINING
Yes, we offer personal strength and fitness training programs written by our most experienced coaches with your goals and individual needs in mind, as well as private Muay Thai training for those that prefer a non-group class setting and even more individual attention.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU RECOMMEND TRAINING TO GET RESULTS?
We recommend starting with three days per week unless you have been already training regularly with weights and intense exercise. You can ramp up you training volume gradually, over the course of your first eight weeks, if your aim is to train more than three days a week.
If you have only 2-3 days a week to train we recommend choosing one primary program, or you can choose one main program for eight weeks, then alternate every eight weeks with the other. (For students primarily training Muay Thai who want to do strength training on occasion, but not more than 1 class a week, we recommend the “Fight Fit” class as a better complement to their training.
If you have 4-6 days per week to train you can choose a combination of both Muay Thai and Barbell/Kettlebell training.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION?
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR/BRING FOR MY FIRST TRAINING SESSION?
Muay Thai —> Wear comfy clothes you can workout in that will allow for kicking movements (yoga pants, shorts, etc. are ok) no uniform is required, but men must wear a shirt and shorts that do not go over the knees is recommended for form and comfort when kicking. Muay Thai is practiced barefoot; footwear is not permitted.
Glove Rental is complimentary for intro session(s) and included in your 30 day Trial. Members or those continuing after their trial must purchase gloves or continue to rent them ($2)
You’ll need hand wraps ($10 plus tax) or for clean rentals $1 each use. We will help you learn how to wrap them or go to our Youtube channel and search “How to wrap your hands.” Please come EARLY to class for help with your hand wraps. We may not be able to assist you with your wraps if you are late to class or show up right when the class is starting.
Strength Classes —> Wear flat shoes like Converse or barefoot style shoes like Vibrams, or you can go barefoot too, running shoes are not appropriate for kettlebell/barbell training as they will affect correct technique. Proper athletic wear is required: short/pants and shirt/tank.
DO YOU SELL GLOVES AND OTHER GEAR?
WHAT IF THE CLASS I WANT TO ATTEND IS FULL?
You can Wait-list classes by signing up online at MindBody or calling the gym. If you have wait-listed a class you will be contacted via email if a spot opens up.
Especially on the weekends, people often cancel so please make sure to check your email. Almost all waitlisted people DO get into the class of their choice. Make sure your Mindbody email and phone number are correct on your account.
If you live close, you are also welcome to walk-in and “standby” the class to take someone’s spot if they no-show.
HOW IS YOUR STRENGTH PROGRAM DIFFERENT THAN CROSSFIT?
F5 Strength Traning uses the StrongFirst system of kettlebell, barbell, and body weight training. The strength principles of Strong First vary to those of CrossFit and the programming is different. We describe strength as a skill that needs to be practiced. Every lift is an opportunity to practice the principles incorporated in a heavy lift or movement. StrongFirst emphasizes the idea that reps should be kept relatively low in practicing the skill of strength.
Our barbell and kettlebell conditioning portions of the classes are not timed and follow a more interval-based system with work to rest ratios. For strength training, we follow a system that is rooted in linear periodization, which is different than most CrossFit programming.
Additionally, our style of kettlebells is Russian style (v.s. American style).
DO I HAVE TO WANT TO FIGHT TO TRAIN MUAY THAI?
No. Many students learn Muay Thai as a fun way to get fit and learn skills without ever sparring and fighting. It’s a sport, and we teach the real techniques of Muay Thai, but it’s also a good workout even in you choose not to spar or fight.
Some students eventually decide to learn to spar but never fight, and that’s okay too.
DO I HAVE TO SPAR (PERSON ON PERSON CONTACT) IN MUAY THAI?
No. At F5, sparring (person to person contact with protective gear to practice the defense and offense of the sport) is optional and only taught to our advanced Level 2 students if desired.
However, you will strike pads and bags and learn basic defense without sparring in class. Please note that our classes are pad work classes with partners, so there is some person to person contact, just with a pad in between, which makes is safer and more controlled than sparring.

WHAT IF I WANT TO FIGHT ONE DAY?
Great! We have an active fight team and a program in place for you to advance to Level 2 Classes and eventually to fight for those that qualify. If you put in the work at the gym and prove your skills, we will help get you to your goal. Many of our advanced Level 2 students have progressed to take the “F5 Team Test”, which is a requirement to being on our fight team, and then moved on to competition.
