I am a total beginner and /or out of shapE  - What Do you Recommend?

All our students AND instructors have been beginners at one time. We understand what it's like to start from the ground up and will coach you through your fitness progression. We have a zero tolerance for bullies in class and think you will find that all our students are very supportive. The classes are small so that we can scale exercises and workouts to the individual. Function 5 is a welcoming atmosphere for all those with a desire to learn and the dedication to show up with an open mind.

All students start our at F5 with a PRIVATE intro to Muay Thai and Strength before attending other classes. This is helpful even if you have had a little experience since each gym has a different way of doing things and you may be unfamiliar with our style.

Your Intro Sessions will be scheduled in your consultation so you can get started asap.

If you are a beginner we recommend starting with 3 days a week. Some people love it and make more time to train, which is great! If you have only 2-3 days a week to train we recommend choosing one primary program.  If you have more time (4-6 days a week) to train you can choose a mix of both Muay Thai and strength training.

Yes! We offer special member rates for personal training as well as non member packages.  Please contact us for more information.

Why don't you offer a first class free?

We'd like to really get to know better and show you around the gym before you start training with us. That way we can review your goals and recommend a program for you that gets you the results you want. Instead of a first class free, we offer a complimentary consultation  so we can give you our undivided attention and answer all your questions. Remember also that our 30 Day Trial is Risk Free with a Money Back Guarantee, even better than just one free class! Also private intro sessions are included in the Trial!

Complimentary consultations take about 45-60 mins, we schedule a full hour to be safe. We will discuss your goals,  your medical training history, your previous fitness experience, and get to know you better so we can help you get the best results possible. We perform a functional movement screen, give you a tour and go over the best program options that suit your needs.  This is a “getting to know you session”. You probably have a lot of questions for us and we want to give you our undivided attention. Please come prepared to move around and engage in light full body movements. If you feel it's a fit we'll schedule your first session asap!

What should I wear/bring for my first CLASS?

Muay Thai ---> Wear comfy clothes you can workout in that will allow for kicking movements (yoga pants, shorts etc are ok) no uniform is required, but guys must wear a shirt. Muay Thai is done barefoot, footwear is not permitted.

Glove Rental is complimentary for intro session(s) and is included in your 30 day Trial. Members, or those continuing after their trial must purchase gloves or continue to rent them ($2)

You’ll need hand wraps ($10 plus tax) or for clean rentals $1 each use. We will help you learn how to wrap them or go to our Youtube channel and search “How to wrap your hands”. Please come EARLY to class for help with your handwraps. We cannot help you with your wraps if you are late to class or show up right when class is starting.

Strength Classes ---> Wear flat shoes like Converse or barefoot style shoes like Vibrams, or you can go barefoot too, running shoes are not appropriate for kettlebell/barbell training as they will impair proper technique, proper athletic wear is required: short/pants and shirt/tank.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand . It was developed originally as close contact battle techniques but is now a popular spectator sport in many countries. Muay Thai is also called the art of eight limbs because it uses punches, kicks elbow and knees to strike. It is similar to kickboxing, but has different origins and the additional use of elbow and knee strikes.

Do I have to want to be a fighter to train Muay Thai?

No. Many students learn Muay Thai as a fun way to get fit and learn skills without ever sparring.

What if I want to fight?

We can help you with that too. If you think you have what it takes come train with us for a while and we'll let you know when you are ready to move on to the advanced classes and take the "F5 Team Test" which is a requirement to being on our fight team.

Do I have to spar (person on person contact) in Muay Thai?

No. At Function 5 sparring is optional and only taught to advanced students if desired. However you will strike pads and bags and learn basic defense without sparring in class. Designated sparring/advanced classes are offered for those who wish to learn and are ready.

What is the basic format of a Muay Thai class?

Generally we jump rope and perform body weight exercises to warm up. This is followed by shadow boxing, kick pad, mitt, Thai pad and/or heavy bag work. You will learn specific combinations and techniques in class as well as learn how to hold pads for other students. There is attention to skill/technique as well as fitness/cardio. Functional exercises and circuit training are often included in classes as well as stretching.  Hand wraps and gloves are required for class.
